Original observation

Living in the Netherlands, I’m used to supermarkets being very functional: go in, shop, leave. What caught my attention in Gothenburg was how much the physical space changed that feeling. Wide aisles, high ceilings and an open layout made an everyday supermarket visit feel noticeably more comfortable.

The store uses space as part of the customer experience. You don’t feel squeezed between shelves or rushed through the store. That can make people more willing to browse, discover products and spend more time inside.

Use MAXI’s huge physical space to create a “slow shopping hour” every evening: softer lighting, fewer announcements, tasting stations and small seating areas around selected departments. Instead of competing only on price and range, MAXI could make grocery shopping feel like a place to spend time — almost halfway between a supermarket and a relaxed food hall.
